Humphrey's exasperating do-nothing-ism was played for laughs. It was satirical (I believe) these are the dangers of what your government MIGHT be IF...Reductio ad absurdum. These days, however if he existed he'd be a veritable Ghengis Khan of decisive action. Butt covering beyond a defensive survival tactic has become an active crusade. At least Humphrey did it all with his easy chair at the club in mind. There was material comfort and (I want to say) Scotch at the end of the day and the approval of his clandestine set.
This is still so relevant in 2024. It is most probably the most honest description of the English mindset. More so than from the politicians. Margret Thatcher days about the time of this TV series. I do not live in the UK but it was so obvious you were getting the wool pulled over your eyes regarding Brexit. Shout out to Rod Stewart; remember reading how he wanted to stay with Europe. Sings pretty good as well.
Simply never bettered. The writers used to take the Whitehall men for generous lunches and let them tell anonymous anecdotes. I’ll bet they loved it when their stories got into the series.
One thing Brexit did was to scare the crap out of the other EU countries, some who might have thought of leaving the EU. Now they saw the shit storm and pigs breakfast made with Brexit, that it made the EU even stronger

I don't think this aged very well. Also funny how the average british idiot thinks the UK is not in europe any more because europe and eu sounds too similar and they all noticed brexit.
Going back to the eu? Seriously… A few media outlets who never expected the outcome of the referendum are peddling the agenda of Brexit remorse… it’s a big lie. If there was any remorse, why no major political party is not talking about it? As in we are about to have a general election…
That's why it came to such a surprise that the Brits finally made good on their promise to piss off.

Europe is a placeholder ... Asia... Africa... all of them
That joke about the UN was horrifyingly accurate, LOL!
Get in, have Brexit. Fraxit, Nedxit to flow suit. So relatable.
Like Sir Humphry's enthusiasm when he says "pig's breakfast!"
Pro EU you see😂
I'm confused. Why did they include a documentary episode in.
Talk about the United Nations' impotence
WAS in the EU.
"You have to get behind someone, to be able to stab him in the back". British Foreign Policy from inception.
And now you're out... You can't turn everyone against each other anymore.

Ted Heath has a lot to answer for, for taking us in despite the opposition of Foot & Co in the Labour Party.

Crivvens! An especially poignant episode, remarkably consistent with current politics 😅
He wasn't kidding 😂

I JUST realized that’s Cocto from DEMOLITION MAN 😄
Are classics graduates still in demand in the public service?
Perfect explanation of the attitudes of the English elites towards European continent.
Just as relevant today as it was 40 years ago.
History repeats itself
I love the subtle, intelligent writing of this series.
Tale as long as time!
SO SO CLOSE TO THE TRUTH !!
This has aged so well.
„Butter Mountain, The Wine Lake, and Milk Ocean ...„ And now you have the no Butter valley, the wine pond and the milk wasteland. Have fun.
Watching it now in 2024, this serial makes a lot of sense.
The last minute and a half is worth a 7 year post doc in politics.
Wow so thats why we joined and got out to break up Europe 😂
well this aged poorly
"To break the European Union, the best way was to get in and destroy it from the inside".. So glad the UK is out of the EU. I am Belgian.

dziękuję
This didn’t lose one bit accuracy. Only difference is that it is the UK that is stuffed now.
The best bit is that this is actual US policy. The reason the Americans disapprove of Brexit is because the UK is their spoon.
So of our times - goosebumps.
And today it is the Ukrainians against the Russians...
Not the EU. He's talking about the EEC, which was a predecessor organization. The EU didn't exist when "Yes, Minister" was filmed.
and this, children, is why "Yes, Minister" is one of the best Britcoms ever
How current this feels 😢
@BCHAOTIC

I think it aged like wine
Precursor to The Thick Of It
Het is wel waarheid wat Humprey zegt 😂
Het is wel waarheid wat Humprey zegt 😂
Look what we have now , a real police state
No you don't.
And now that the UK's all upset over Brexit because they were successful in mucking up their own futures, they want to go back to the EU.

'Appling Cynicisim...' "Yes... We call it Diplomacy, Minister." It's difficult to sum up a profession in eight words but there you have it.
Same as Russia and Hungry work now on the world stage, this program is classic and still try in 2023 / 2024
